Headlines:

      1. 1 Samuel gets positive reviews as eight helpers in the various regions where Wolof is spoken turn in the results from their testing in preparation for the consultant check.
     

     2. Five disciples of B., himself discipled in the Diourbel church, are arrested for proselytizing in another African country which is under a repressive regime.

     3. Marilyn and Mary Anne prepare for home assignment, August 2006 to January 2007.

The stories:

      1. A reviser who helped with the translation of the N.T. raved, "This translation is excellent," after he read Mamadou's translation of 1 Samuel. May the word of God touch the three back translators, who helped with previous consultant checks: a French teacher, a director of a national Wolof literacy program, and a woman involved in training their literacy teachers. Dr. Fritz Goerling of SIL will be the consultant again.

     2. Former Diourbel church member B. returned to his home country as a fearless witness. A radical President was elected there in May. Immediately five persons were arrested for "proselytizing." B. asks prayer that the prisoners can get food and water, and a good lawyer to defend their case.

     3. I am especially burdened this Home Assignment to inform serious prayer partners about the theology behind Al Qaeda and other extremist groups, and why the translation of the O.T. for a Muslim people is so important. I'm sending my itinerary in a separate email.

More stories illustrate that perseverance in prayer intensifies praise to God:

Our friend Ami attributes her daughter's safe delivery of twin girls this month to God's answering our prayers. When Mary Anne and I went to the baby naming ceremony, we saw a young man who used to come to church but fell away. We encouraged him to return, and he did, June 18. At the end of the service with a broken heart he asked for prayer. S.P.F., member since the Diourbel church began 26 YEARS AGO and recently back into recovery from substance abuse, got up and said to him, "Look at me. Do you realize how many times I have fallen away and come back?" He choked up, and couldn't say any more. The rest of us were nearly in tears, too. God's grace is limitless.

For the past TWO YEARS, since her baptism, the wife of one of the Diourbel church's elders was shunned by her family. But this month, the family had a meeting and decided they would accept her following the religion of her husband. But D., a high school girl who recently found the Messiah through the church, struggles in that her family wants her to marry someone who does not share her faith.

Thank God for flat tires. The Deets, an embassy family I met at Sanctuary Bible Church in Carmel Valley in 2003, visited us end of May.
We were on our way in their car to the sand quarries outside Diourbel, when a tire went flat. I called our mechanic, ran to get our car, and we headed out to the quarries with the sun already high and hot. As we admired the vegetable gardens irrigated from wells dug in the quarry, a man ran up, greeted us and asked if we had a vehicle. His son had fallen into a holding basin and nearly drowned, but was still alive. I left Mary Anne with the Deets, ran for our car, and took Ndoye and son El Hadj to the dispensary, where a nurse checked him over. They kept him overnight for observation and he's O.K. now. If we hadn't been held up by a flat, we would have finished our walk through the quarry before El Hadj fell into the basin.

Later an SIM missionary called from Kaffrine, saying he heard about people raising tilapia fish in the Diourbel quarry, and wanted to know where he could purchase stock. So I went to Ndoye's field to talk with him about it. The fish to help the Kaffrine church was taken from a holding basin near the one where El Hadj nearly drowned. The fish will increase the protein intake of the group of Wolof believers in Kaffrine.
Another advantage of this project is that locusts don't eat fish, and Kaffrine has plenty of locusts already this season.

More prayer updates:

MR. MAMADOU is first-drafting Proverbs. Please pray for God's protection over his mind, for wisdom from above, for his prayerfully fulfilling his roles as husband and father, and elder in the Brethren Assembly in Malika. Pray for him and the Assembly to grow in grace.

DIRKA Stoessel (WEC) is proof reading Genesis-Exodus-Leviticus in order to distribute these books with their footnotes and glossaries to the various workers among the Wolofs. She is doing a thorough and careful work going through the word list that the Paratext program generates.
Pray for her health.

JULIEN is keyboarding Mamadou's manuscripts of Deuteronomy and Esther.

Gerald and Alice HARKINS are moving to the NY- northern NJ area, to be closer to help Alice's ailing mother. Gerald will study Hebrew at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, NY, and theology through correspondence courses. They are thankful for their studies at GIAL in Dallas.

The insurance company is still waiting for the report from the independent doctor who saw ASSAN.

DIOURBEL CHURCH is moving their bricks to a small piece of land where they hope to build a parsonage with a large room that will serve as temporary meeting place.

DAD (age 91-1/2) is getting some use of his left hand back.
